5 Signs You Should See a Mental Health Counselor

5-Signs-You-Should-See-a-Counselor-4.jpg

Many people talk about taking care of your physical health but it is less common to hear tips on managing your mental health.

Approximately 1 in 5 Americans experience mental illness at least once a year. That’s nearly 44 million people who experience mental illness! So many people struggle with mental illness or mental distress and don’t get the help that they need. In fact, mental illness can have some devastating consequences.

An estimated 46 percent of the homeless population lives with severe mental illness and/or addition. Additionally, 70 percent of youth in detention centers deal with some type of mental illness.

Your mental health is just as important or maybe more important than your physical health. Your mental health significantly affects your quality of life from your enjoyment of hobbies to dealing with the highs and lows of everyday living.

If you feel like your quality of life has been slipping lately, you may need to see a counselor. Here are five signs you should see a counselor.

Your Mental Situation Is Causing Distress

One major way to know whether or not you need help with your mental health is to see how it’s affecting your life on a stress level. Does your mental condition cause you significant distress; so much so that you’re starting to experience physical symptoms such as headaches, nausea, vomiting, sweaty palms, nervous tics, or acid reflux?

What about your cognitive functioning at home, school, or work? Do you feel like your enthusiasm is slipping at work or school? What about your concentration? You may feel like you can’t muster up the strength to sit down and concentrate on your work, which can lead to problems at work and even unemployment. Sometimes significant distress can just mean feeling overwhelmed on a daily basis.

If your mental distress is preventing you from functioning at a normal level in your relationships, work, and personal life, it may be time to see a counselor.

You’ve Experienced Some Type of Trauma

Have you experienced some type of significant type of trauma at any point in your life? Believe it or not, both recent and past trauma can affect you emotionally in your everyday life. Some examples of trauma that may affect you could be the death of a loved one, an abusive relationship, whether intimate, professional or familial.

Getting help with any type of recent trauma is a good idea as it can cause unhealthy habits, cause loss of sleep, and more. If you just can’t get over a particular experience and it’s affecting your job, relationships or sleep, it may be time to get help from a professional counselor.

unhealthy coping behaviorsYou’ve started to Use Food, Substances, or Some Other Type of Unhealthy Behaviors to Cope

Another really significant sign of mental distress is using some type of substance or behavior as a way to cope. Some common substances that people use to cope with their mental state are alcohol, cigarettes, drugs, and food.

Substances aren’t the only things that people use to deal with mental distress. Sometimes seemingly innocent behaviors such as checking your phone, looking at pornography, having sex, gambling, or shopping can turn into full-blown addictions.

Using substances or behaviors as a way to avoid the pain of your mental distress can put you in the position of having to deal with your mental distress on top of an addiction.

Your Friends or Family Have Tried to Talk To You About Your Mental State

Have the people close to you in your life mentioned unusual behaviors such as you not keeping up with your appearance as you usually do, gaining or losing a significant amount of weight in a short period of time, or how they see you’re distancing yourself?

Sometimes, we can get so wrapped up in our own mental state that we don’t have any awareness of how some of our behaviors have changed. Some people can be depressed or anxious and not even notice.

It’s important to pay attention to people’s questions or pleas for concerns about your unusual activity and behavior. These people care about you and wouldn’t bring it up if they didn’t feel like you needed some type of help or support.

If a loved one, close friend or even a co-worker says to you, “You need help” then it may be a sign that you need to look into getting some type of help.

You Want More Support

You don’t necessarily need to have a mental illness to go and see a therapist. Sometimes we just need extra emotional support in our lives and it may help us get through the temporary issues in life to know that someone is listening to us.

Going to therapy is a great way to have someone listen to you, not judge you and give you unbiased feedback.

Additionally, getting support doesn’t mean that you are necessarily struggling. Maybe you want to understand yourself more, find out what your purpose in life is, or just get some direction on your current relationships and career.

Therapists are extremely talented at asking the right questions to get us to think, reflect upon our thoughts, and discover the answers to our problems and questions.

Going to this walk-in clinic was a good decision for me. I’ve been having a lot of problems in my relationship. My wife would always tell me that i am not in line with my life and that i was not focused. Although she would always encourage me and tell me that she believes in me i could not seem to get my things together. I would fall into these cycles where i do well for a while but end up right back to the same place. Over and over again. frustrated and upset with my self. My relationship, work, bills, physical health were all taking a hit. i did not know what the problem was Until i came into this clinic. Im sharing this with hopes that someone who is going through the same problems can relate and get help like i did.. I ended up getting medicine that would help me concentrate, now the medicine helps. but what helped the most was consulting with the doctors at this clinic. I’ve never been spoken to by a doctor the way this doctor spoke to me. She was straight forward. I appreciate her for all she did. she might not now how she saved my life from falling apart or maybe she does because that is her job. Now if you are like me and dont know what the problem is, coming into this clinic was the right choice for me and it might be the right choice for you.

I never expected to be needing any medications for my mood swings or anything i always thought that they were due to my being on my period or just because i’m a teen and we have those but i was all wrong. it was all due to my mental health. walking in to this clinic i felt very weird because i had never addressed myself as a mentally unstable person but i got over it and my medications have been great! i don’t fight as much as i used to and im not as sad as i used to be. Depression and anxiety are not things to take lightly if you feel uncertain of your mental health ezcare is the way to go! the doctors are great and they make you feel like you’re at home.

Emotional support animals follow their owners to areas that are off-limits to other pets. This is because they’re recommended as a treatment for mental afflictions like anxiety, depression, even PTSD. Not to be mistaken for service animals. The main distinction is its functions. Apply for ESA Letter Today! BOOK AN APPOINTMENT While ESAs are companions, service animals help their disabled handlers with duties such as answering the door, carrying medicine, and guiding their movement. ESAs don’t need extra conditioning like their service counterparts whose training ranges from heeling, proofing, and performing specific tasks. Another difference is their certification. Your disability should match the ADA description for your service animal to be recognized. Conversely, an ESA letter is provided by your therapist. How ESAs Improve Your Travel Experience By lifting your mood, support animals eliminate the need for anxiety medication on your journey. Pills may be effective, but you’ll still have side effects like fatigue and nausea. Furthermore, they act as distractions during long trips. Instead of worrying, your mind is occupied by the animal. The fact that you have another creature to care for besides yourself gives you purpose. They thought of bonding with your pet may make an otherwise reserved person crave for adventure. ESAs also spark conversations between strangers. This is especially true for moments packed with tension like turbulence. Travel Necessities for Your ESA Traveling with their handlers gives ESAs an edge over ordinary pets. If you think moving with an animal is stressful, try it with a mental condition. Here are some trip essentials regardless of your mode of transport. Things to pack while travelling 5 Things to Pack While Travelling 1. ESA Letter An ESA letter is mandatory for any support animal in a plane cabin. For the document to be valid, however, it must fulfill the following specifications. The letter is on your issuing therapist’s letterhead. You’re currently under a licensed professional’s care. The letter contains the license date, type, and issuing state. Your illness is found in the DSM. You need the ESA for the trip or destination. The document requires an annual update. Ensure you alert the airline beforehand. Initially, you could show up with your pet without an announcement. The rules have since changed with most carriers requiring a 48-hour notice. Again, check your destination’s guidelines regarding support animals. Not all countries allow ESAs from foreign lands. 2. Travel Crate Apart from transportation, a travel crate protects your furry companion from harsh conditions like snow and rain. You’ll have to train your ESA if they’ve never experienced a carrier. In the initial stages, don’t lock the crate with the animal inside. The idea is viewing it as a safe space instead of a punishment. Likewise, put the case in the room your pet spends most of their time. Putting treats in the cage or feeding them next to it will keep your ESA interested. You can add blankets and toys to give the container a homely feel when on the move. Similarly, secure the cage to the seat or hold it to prevent the ESA from shifting. While at it, ensure your support creature gets sufficient air to prevent suffocation. You can do this by ditching the layovers during summer and getting a container with better ventilation. Although they come in different sizes, some animals are too big for a carrier. That’s where leashes come in. Apply for ESA Letter Today! BOOK AN APPOINTMENT 3. Leash The crowds in airports and train stations are bound to stress your ESA. That’s why you need a leash to guide their movement and protect other travelers together with their belongings and animals from attack. But your pet isn’t the only cause of danger. For starters, your unrestrained dog might get run over if it wanders away in a bus station. It could also contract diseases after sniffing another animal’s droppings. Chains also make it easier to locate you in case your ESA gets lost. Most leashes include a tag for writing your identification details. Moreover, the restraint also makes your pet harder to steal. From resale and breeding to ransoms and fighting rings, animal theft is motivated by several reasons. Most importantly, the law demands you leash your animal. Games to play with dog How to Keep Your Dog Entertained on a Road Trip? 4. Bedding Repay your animal’s emotional support by keeping them comfortable. Though the airline can organize a special seat on request, your pup will be more settled in familiar bedding. If your pet doesn’t have a bed already, prioritize the quality of materials when shopping. Substandard fabrics are not only uncomfortable but also less durable. The size is also crucial. While a small bed will tire your ESA, a larger one is difficult to move. Even so, some models have straps and clips for portability. Surfaces that absorb moisture will develop an odor from the animal’s urine. This calls for a mild water-repelling spray. Apply for ESA Letter Today!
