Is-Contrave-or-Saxenda-better-for-weight-loss-in-patients-who-have-diabetes.jpg

Contrave or Saxenda better for weight loss

Trying to lose weight in California can be especially hard for individuals who have other medical conditions such as diabetes. While some patients had diabetes before becoming overweight, others gained weight as a result of obesity. Since these two issues can be related to one another, it is important that patients who want to begin a weight loss program understand how their medications work. While there are several products on the market designed for weight loss, Contrave and Saxenda are among the most popular prescriptions available.

Contrave

Contrave is an anorexiant (appetite suppressant) that contains a combination of bupropion and naltrexone. Bupropion is an anti-depressant that can suppress the appetite, whereas naltrexone is usually given to block the effects of narcotics or alcohol in patients who have an addiction. Naltrexone has also been found to be effective in curbing hunger and food cravings.

Contrave side effects

Like all medications, Contrave can cause unwanted side effects, including nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, headaches, dizziness, dry mouth, or sleep problems such as insomnia. Because this is not a complete list, other side effects may occur. Emergency help should be sought if signs of an allergic reaction occur, such as:

  • Fever
  • Swollen glands
  • Mouth sores
  • Muscle or joint pains
  • Hives
  • Rash or itching
  • Chest pain
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat

Saxenda

Saxenda - injectable weight loss medicine

Saxenda is an injectable medicine that may help some adults lose excess weight, and that also have weight-related medical problems such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or type 2 diabetes. This medication should be used with a reduced calorie meal plan and increased physical activity.

Saxenda mimics the hormone GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide) that, in part, tells the brain that you are full. This medicine also works to help beta cells normalize blood sugars as well. Beta cells are responsible for making and releasing insulin when the blood sugar is high, helping those with type 2 diabetes to keep their levels reasonable.

Saxenda side effects

Saxenda may cause serious side effects, including:

  • Possible thyroid tumors including cancer
  • Pancreatitis
  • Low blood sugar
  • Gall bladder issues
  • Increased heart rate
  • Kidney failure
  • Depression or thoughts of suicide

Common Saxenda side effects include:

  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea
  • Constipation
  • Headache
  • Vomiting
  • Low blood sugar
  • Decreased appetite
  • Upset stomach
  • Tiredness
  • Dizziness
  • Stomach pain
  • changes in enzyme levels in the blood

These symptoms, especially nausea, should decrease over time as the body gets used to the medication. Be sure to tell your doctor if you have any side effect that bothers you or does not go away.

Effects on diabetes

Effects of Contrave and Saxenda on diabetes

Diabetes is one of those medical conditions that must be taken into consideration whenever taking a new medication or beginning another treatment program. Individuals who are overweight or are obese are especially prone to complications in their disease. While some medicines may make the blood sugar rise, others do the opposite and make it fall, both of which can be dangerous.

In some cases, the change in blood sugar levels fluctuates so much that individuals are in danger of passing out and slipping into a coma. Special care should always be taken to prevent either of these from happening. While Contrave isn’t approved for treating diabetes, individuals who have diabetes should seek the advice of their medical doctor before beginning this or any other treatment.

Saxenda was approved as a weight loss medication in 2012 after researchers discovered that patients who took Victoza lost weight. Victoza is used for the treatment of Type 2 Diabetes. Saxenda and Victoza are the same medications but at different dosages that are marketed under different names.

Weight loss treatment for patients with diabetes in San Francisco

Individuals who are concerned with both weight loss and diabetes should consult their physician regarding Saxenda. While it may not be an appropriate substitute for other diabetes medications, patients using Saxenda may see an improvement in their blood sugar numbers. On the other hand, Contrave will not treat any weight-related medical condition such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or diabetes.

As with any diet or exercise plan, a medical doctor should be consulted before beginning any treatment. Weight loss on Xenical

Obesity is a serious health issue plaguing the United States, as of 2014, an estimated 30% of the population were diagnosed as clinically obese. This condition isn’t just an issue that affects the size of our waists; it is a chronic disease as defined by the American Medical Association, and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) as well as being considered a national epidemic by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Serious physical, metabolic, and psychological health issues are caused by obesity every day. The problem is so severe that an estimated $210 billion was spent on direct and indirect health care costs as of 2010. Since that time, obesity rates have steadily risen.

With such a focus on health care and prevention, it’s hard to image how obesity has gotten so out of control. Consuming more calories than is burned off by daily activity and exercise causes obesity.

Additional issues that contribute to obesity:

  • Poor diet high in fat and calories
  • Sedentary lifestyle
  • Poor sleep habits which lead to hormonal changes
  • Genetics
  • Aging which leads to less muscle mass and a slower metabolic rate
  • Pregnancy weight that is difficult to lose may eventually lead to obesity

Weight loss medications

Prescription weight loss pills are typically prescribed as an additional tool for weight loss. They are designed to be taken with foods that are low in fat and calories and a regular exercise program.  Most weight loss medications contain a stimulant to suppress the appetite. Because these medications have a higher risk of abuse, they are labeled as a controlled substance by the FDA.

For the most part, diet pills are reserved for severe circumstances when weight loss has not been successful, and the patient has health risks associated with being overweight or obese. However, diet and exercise should always be used in conjunction with prescription weight loss drugs. Typically, these medications are only indicated for obese patients with an initial body mass index (BMI) greater than 30 or 27 in patients that have other risk factors such as high blood pressure or type 2 diabetes.

Xenical

Orlistat is a prescription drug marketed under the name Xenical that acts as a lipase inhibitor (decreases the gastrointestinal absorption of fat) to reduce caloric intake. Xenical should be used in combination with other treatment methods that include diet, exercise, and weight control. When using this medication, the daily intake of fat, protein, and carbohydrates must be divided evenly between meals and to avoid a diet that is high in fat. Patients on Xenical can have an increased risk of unpleasant gastrointestinal side effects.

Common side effects with Xenical are typically caused by the fat-blocking action and can be a sign that the medication is not working though they may lessen with continued use:

  • Oily or fatty stools
  • Oily spotting in undergarments
  • Orange or brown coloration in stools
  • Gas and oily discharge
  • Loose stools or an urgent need to go to the bathroom, inability to control bowel movements
  • Increased number of bowel movements
  • Stomach pain, nausea, rectal pain

Stop using Xenical and contact your doctor at once if you have any of the following symptoms:

  • Severe stomach pain
  • Severe pain in the lower back
  • Blood in the urine, painful or difficulty urinating
  • Kidney problems; little or no urinating; swelling in the feet or ankles
  • Feeling tired or short of breath
  • Liver problems; nausea, upper stomach pain, itching, tired feeling, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay-colored stools, jaundice

How effective is Xenical

According to several studies posted online, Xenical is an effective weight loss medication if used correctly and in conjunction with a diet low in fat along with regular exercise. Although every patient is different, most reports conclude that on average, Xenical patients lose up to 30% more than patients not using any medications at all.

Before you begin this or any weight loss program, consult your physician. While not all overweight patients have other health conditions, those who do should address them as well as their weight.

L-Arginine.jpg

Understanding Amino Acids

Your body is made up of many different components, all of which work to help you have the healthiest body possible. Various parts work in conjunction with one another to provide you with helpful blood cells and hormones that keep you functioning properly. Many of these things that make up your immune and nervous system combine and change their functions to make sure everything in the human body is working as intended.

Among the many different systems in the body, amino acids are major compounds that have their hand in nearly everything that goes on. They help the body form proteins, which means allowing the body to grow, heal, and break down food. This also means amino acids can break down and serve as energy.

Amino acids come in three categories: essential, nonessential, and conditional. Essential amino acids have to come from food; nonessential amino acids do not have to come from food, meaning our bodies can produce them. Conditional amino acids tend to only come in handy if our body needs it, such as when we are ill. Having a healthy variety in your diet contributes to this balance of amino acids. There are also different ways to make sure you get the right kind of protein, in case your diet does not feature certain food groups.

What Is L-Arginine?

What Is L-Arginine

Arginine, also known as L-arginine, is an a-amino acid that can be found in most food and can be synthesized within the body. It can be classified as both essential and conditional, as arginine can be supplied by the foods we eat, supplements taken, and within our bodies. How we get arginine and in what quantities varies; some people have no problems getting arginine or don’t need more, while others need it for growth purposes, or may have a very rare deficiency.

Most people who get arginine will have it in them already just from their regular diet. It’s not uncommon in the slightest and helps widen and relax your blood vessels by helping create nitric oxide. In addition to that, arginine also helps the body heal its wounds, which is part of what makes it a semi-essential amino acid. It can also help you with your immune system, which means it will keep you healthy in a regular capacity.

Even though arginine is easily gained from the body and the foods we eat, it can also be taken as a supplement. This makes sense if you are low on arginine for whatever reason, but it if you want or need more, it can be helpful. However, it is important to know that taking in more arginine in supplement form can cause side-effects, such as an upset stomach. However, these side-effects are unlikely if you try to get more arginine via food.

Since adults tend to get arginine from the foods they eat, you want to make sure you get certain foods in your diet. These include meats like turkey, chicken, and pork; you can also eat soybeans and peanuts, along with dairy products. No matter your diet, you should be able to get enough arginine in your diet with the variety of foods that provide it.

What Does L-Arginine Do Sexually

Among the benefits of increased arginine is improving the sexual health of men with erectile dysfunction. While not a hard science, it has been said and proven to different degrees that arginine can help those with ED. Ideally, since arginine helps widen the blood vessels, it allows for better blood flow throughout the body. Better and healthier blood flow through the arteries means more blood flow to the penis, thus better chance at having a healthy and normal erection.

That said, arginine on its own does not necessarily improve erectile dysfunction completely. It does keep you healthy and promote blood flow, but no concrete scientific evidence proves it will fully cure you of ED. However, there are some combinations with arginine that do help.

If your ED is not too severe, you can combine an arginine supplement with yohimbine hydrochloride. A more potent mix is arginine and Pycnogenol, which is a supplement made from pine tree bark (Pycnogenol is the registered trademarked name). A study demonstrated improvement in the erections of men ranging several ages; the combination of the two supplements also did not cause side-effects common in ED medication.
