ESA Letters – The Main Benefits
An ESA letter can help you both for traveling and housing reasons.
When traveling with an emotional support dog
You pay nothing to bring your dog on a flight
Your dog can sit with you instead of staying with the other pets
When renting with an emotional support dog
A landlord will be unable to charge extra rent
A landlord will be unable to charge a pet deposit
A landlord will be unable to reject you for having a pet
Furthermore, you do not have to disclose anything other than your ESA letter to a landlord. They are not entitled to any information on your medical issues and they cannot request a copy of your medical records. Landlords are also unable to require any particular training as eligibility criteria to allow you to rent from then while living with an emotional support animal.
Your ESA pet can also live with you at a college dorm. In fact, some institutions were fined for not adhering by the Fair Housing Act and attempting to disallow these pets at their residence. You’re completely allowed to have an emotional support animal live with you at your dorm, so long as you get an official ESA letter from a state-licensed doctor.
Note: Make sure to keep your ESA letter up-to-date; you should “renew” your letter once a year so it remains valid.
How to Get an ESA Letter
Book an appointment with us to get started. We make the process as simple as possible. You can visit our walk-in clinic to take care of everything or we’ll help you finish the application online. Documents can be handled by phone, email or 24/7 via an online process.
To get an ESA letter from EZCare Clinic we need to know what health condition your support animal helps. Don’t worry as to whether you will qualify as there’s a vast list of health issues (both mental and physical) that will make you eligible. In fact, roughly 25% of American adults are living with these issues and currently capable of registering an emotional support dog.
Some examples of qualifying health conditions:
Anorexia, bulimia and other eating disorders
Anxiety, separation anxiety and social anxiety disorder
Bipolar disorder and mood disorder
Depression and post-traumatic stress disorder
Stress and sleep-related disorders
Suicidal thoughts and tendencies
That’s only a scratch at the surface. We advise you to contact us with details on your health situation and to explain why your animal helps in your therapy. We’re pretty confident your animal will be eligible and able to be included for your ESA letter.
Is There an Emotional Support Dog Registry?
Okay, the complexing fact about ESA letters is that they are not handled through a formal database. This aspect is much different than what you see with service animals because there actually is a “Service Dog Registry”. Emotional support animals are there for you when you have an emotional need due to health problems like anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, PTSD, etc. Meanwhile, a Service Animal that’s registered is classified differently under the Americans with Disabilities (ADA) Act.
You will not be registering your emotional support animal via a registry like you would with a service animal. If you are interested in an ADA-registered service animal certificate your dog must meet one of the following criteria: be a guide or sight-seeing dog, be a hearing or signal dog, provide psychiatric services, serve as a social signal or sensory signal dog or be a seizure response dog. All of these classifications require respective training before your dog is able to be listed under ADA’s registry.
So, why do you need an ESA letter in the first place?
No airline or landlord will respect a handmade ESA letter because they have no reason to value what’s said. It’s required that you have actual proof from a licensed doctor that your pet is indeed an “emotional support animal”. A random website claiming to offer ESA letters cannot make this happen. You legitimately need to go to a state-licensed doctor to get a document that will hold weight.
Are ESA Letters Only for Therapy Dogs?
You might not be aware of this but you can register other types of pets to serve as emotional support animals. Even a parrot or cat could be considered for this purpose. The reason is that people look for emotional support in their animals; when someone is struggling, they do not discriminate on the species of your support animal. As cliche as it sounds, “dogs are a man’s best friend” and many women prefer cats… If your animal is serving as an emotional support pet, you can get an ESA letter even if it’s not a dog.
Understand that there’s a need for reasonability here. You could classify a horse as an ESA but still get denied by every airline you go to when you say “Hey, I wanna fly with my horse…here’s my documentation.” That should be a given and the same is true when dealing with landlords; “Sorry, we’ll make an exception for a dog or cat but there’s no way we’ll let a horse stay in a 1-bedroom condo with you for any reason.”
Unfortunately, some people try to game the system and these bad apples spoil it for the rest so some landlords and airline employees have grown to despise dealing with people that have ESAs. Be respectful to them and make use of the system solely so you can continue living a life that makes you comfortable. If your dog or cat traveling with you does that, by all means, make use of the fact that an ESA letter lets your pet board with you and also enjoy the fact that you save on pet fares too.
Beware of Online ESA Letter Scams!
EZCare Clinic is an actual walk-in clinic office located in San Francisco. We handle local patient’s needs for a range of medical problems, from anxiety to ADHD, sexual dysfunction and more. Our staff consists of doctors licensed to practice in the State of California. We’re capable of providing online ESA letters — but, many other online ESA services are not backed by medical professionals.
Be wary of any advertisement you see as there are many frauds that exist. They provide a fabricated document that looks professional but doesn’t hold any legal weight. Your ESA letter will be respected by airlines, landlords, etc, but only if it’s supported by an actual, state-licensed doctor. At EZCare Clinic, we gladly price-match other providers… Give us a call and we’ll help you get your emotional support animal registered the right way while charging a fair rate.
Furthermore, do not fall for “online service animal certification” scams either. These dogs must be trained in order to qualify for a Service Animal certificate. Therefore, the procedure cannot be done online and any site that claims to be able to register your dog as a service animal will be nothing more than a scam.
If you do try to use a fake ESA letter, some airlines and landlords might not realize. The majority will notice the difference and look at you like someone who’s trying to “bend the law” to save money. We all know that an ESA letter saves you on pet fare costs, keeps you from paying pet deposits on your rental unit, etc. Save yourself the potential inconvenience and embarrassment and make sure the ESA letter you purchase is one that will be respected.
